Experts Advice on Eating for High Nutrition
Eating Rainbows

Eat foods of color. The perfect color can
Be found right in the middle of our rainbow,
The color green. There is a pot of gold
And jewels within that rainbow, and these
Treasures so contained can be cashed in
To purchase good health. more

The Dewey Color System: Choose Your Colors, Change Your Life    Among the many things that offer comfort in time of great stress are the colors that surround you, according to noted personality expert Dewey Sadka. Sadka, who has researched the influence of color on personality for over 20 years, says browns are comfort colors that create a down-to-earth perspective that encourage you to be more aware, authentic, and compassionate. "North Americans" are accustomed to comfort words and phases, like 'freedom' and 'love you' and even fond of comfort foods like mashed potatoes and hot apple pie," says Sadka. "But comfort colors, as described in my book, are subliminally recognized, and are equally as healing." Coincidentally, brown shades are presently very trendy and available in fashion and decor. Plus Sadka says, there are a number of hot colors that add a soothing touch to what you already own.  more

Plus Size Fashion Tips What are you to do if you’re a plus-size woman who wants fashion, comfort and fit?

Fabric counts. Stay away from crunchy fabrics. They make you look bigger. Junonia’s Nancy Mendele insists on stretch. “Cheap and clingy doesn’t work. You want a nice fabric with some give.”

Just say no to pleats. Flat-front pants are a plus-size woman’s best friend. Pleats only make you look bigger.

Don’t sweat it. Wicking fabrics are a must for larger women. And they’re not just for active wear. The sweat factor is something no one likes to mention, but it’s there.

Forget tents and floats. Larger women now know that hiding under lots of loose fabric doesn’t help. Wearing a flattering, fitted outfit is a better option.

Watch the line. If it cuts you in the middle, forget it. The eye is drawn to any aberration in line or flow. Make sure it’s drawn to your nicer assets, not your trouble spots.

Battling Midlife Weight Gain When your 'fat' jeans become your everyday jeans, it's time to get serious about losing weight. But that's harder to do in your 40s than in your 20s.

All women 45 to 60 years old are dealing with the same thing. Ages 45 to 60 may be the toughest years in terms of weight maintenance that women face during their lifetimes. While older people generally have a harder time losing weight than younger people, the WHI study found that fiftysomethings had "a much tougher time maintaining their weight" than women in their 60s and 70s.

Most 45-to-60-year-olds tend to have fairly sedentary lives, so they are not getting as much exercise as they once did. And even if your weight doesn't change, your body fat distribution is changing.

In practical terms, what does that mean? You're probably going to have to increase your physical activity. Generally, doctors advise getting 200 minutes of exercise a week to maintain weight, but for anyone going through the menopause transition, at least 300 minutes a week of exercise. That translates into walking at least 10 to 15 miles a week. You have to stop thinking of exercise as a punishment. Think about working with a trainer or taking an aerobics class several times a week.

You're now in a new phase of your life. You need to get over it, and figure out what you're going to do about it. What's best is to aim "to make every meal, every snack, healthy. This means portion control, no snacking, slow down and enjoy everything you do eat. Don't eat anything in front of the TV.

The ultimate goal is to change your lifestyle so that you're taking in fewer calories and expending more energy to keep the weight off permanently.

Hypnotherapy in Weight control
WEIGHT loss, related to overeating, is one of the most common problems that make people seek hypnotherapy.

Hypnotherapy can change body image thoughts. Usually, a patient has a negative self-image.

“So you change the language. You tell them that they’re going to deal with weight control, which is something they can take responsibility for immediately. You get them interested in eating healthy, nutritious food, in doing a little exercise, and in being in control of their weight so that they can have confidence and respect for themselves,” she elaborates on the post-hypnotic suggestion that can be given.

“So you get them to imagine what they want to look like in the future, how it will feel to move their hands or their bodies without the extra weight, how good it will feel, the admiring looks they will get from their friends, how their hair will shine, their skin will be clearer and their eyes will sparkle,” she says.

Watching the Weight Creep Up After Menopause   The weight gain that typically accompanies the menopausal transition may be a little harder to shake. If you don't take measures to prevent it, you could end up with a 10- to 15-pound souvenir.

While there's little doubt that menopausal women have a tendency to pack on extra pounds, experts believe that hormonal changes aren't solely to blame. It's likely that a number of factors contribute to the problem.

Advancing age is one of those factors. The prevalence of obesity in adult women rises significantly with each passing decade, until it begins to taper off late in life.

Studies show that on average, women gain about a pound a year after the age of 40. The greatest increases in weight normally occur during the time of menopause.

As weight creeps up, body composition and fat distribution patterns begin to change. With each passing year, the percentage of body fat tends to increase, while the percentage of lean muscle mass tends to decline.

Loss of lean muscle mass worsens the problem of weight gain, since muscle burns more calories than fat, even when the body is at rest. As muscle tissue dwindles away, the metabolic rate begins to slow, and the body needs fewer calories than it once did.

While pre-menopausal women often struggle with fat deposits around their hips and thighs, much of the newly acquired fat in menopausal women is deposited around the waist. As it turns out, excess fat deposits in the abdominal region are far more worrisome than a little extra padding around the hips and thighs.

Obese women can get healthier without diets: A program that focuses on health benefits rather than weight loss

Obese women can improve their health without dieting by changing their eating habits and exercising more.

Lifestyle changes including exercise programs such as tai chi, aqua aerobics and circuit training, coupled with behavior modification, can improve health risks in obese women even if they do not lose significant amounts of weight.

65 women, who were aged between 24 and 55, were encouraged not to diet but were taught about healthy eating, how to read food labels and prepare nutritious meals. They also had to do four hours of exercise a week and were given social support.

In Training for a Healthier Life Having a personal trainer at the gym used to be the exclusive preserve of the rich and famous, but now the NHS is deploying health trainers across the region to help ordinary people turn their health around.

JOSIE is a shy, partly disabled woman who, by her own admission, has spent the last ten years of her life living a severely restricted existence. Overweight and lacking in confidence, she felt like a prisoner in her own home.

That was until NHS health trainer Elaine Glendenning knocked on her door. Elaine is one of seven health trainers who began working in some of the most deprived areas of Newcastle earlier this year.

The trainers are drawn from local communities and are given basic training in nutrition, exercise and other aspects of healthy living, such as smoking cessation. Their job is to identify individuals and groups who might benefit from support and encourage them to improve their lifestyles.

Elaine answered the call in Newcastle and after a basic healthy living training course she began working in Cruddas Park, an area of the city she knows very well.

In line with the thinking behind the NHS healthy trainers scheme, Elaine used her knowledge of the area to network and meet people. Within a few weeks she had organized a walking group for local people called Stepping Out. A healthy living group for men and an arts and craft group followed.

Through her contacts, Elaine heard about Josie's plight. A sufferer from ataxia, a little-known condition which affects the brain, Josie found it difficult to speak or walk easily. Elaine linked up with Josie and within a few months her progress was remarkable.
A few weeks ago Josie volunteered to speak at an event to launch NHS health trainers in Newcastle, which was attended by the woman in charge of the program, Maggie Rae from the Department of Health.

Despite being in front of an audience of around 100 people, Josie was able to speak about her experiences. "Before I met Elaine I had spent ten years stuck in the house. I hardly ever saw anyone and I couldn't get out and about," she says.

Through a question and answer session with Elaine it emerged that Josie had made a great deal of progress. After joining an exercise class and a swimming club, her confidence has grown in leaps and bounds.

Josie has also benefited from healthy eating advice, losing almost three stones since the summer. "She now has much more confidence and gets about with a stroller walking aid. Really, she has had a new lease of life," says Elaine. "She really doesn't need me any more."
